British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
