Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
