Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
